iF3 Movie Awards Judging Criteria

SKIING

Film of the Year

Judged on the overall quality of a film as a whole: cinematography, editing, level of skiing, diversity of skiing (backcountry, urban, park, etc.), originality, storytelling (if applicable), and wow factor.

Best Cinematography

Judged on the overall quality of a film’s artistic scene capture: composition / framing, exposure, vision, well-executed / original camera angles, and art direction / sense of direction.

Best Editing

Judged on the overall quality of a film’s flow: cuts, transitions, music pairing, continuity, coherence, colour correction, sound design, visual effects, motion graphics, stylistic elements, and storytelling (if applicable).

Standout Female Skier of the Year

To be awarded to the female skier with the most impressive performance in any environment (backcountry, urban, park, etc.), and note that an athlete who excels in either one or all of these environments can be nominated. Since this is an athlete-based award, it is focused solely on the quality / level of skiing, as opposed to any filmmaking-related attributes.

Standout Male Skier of the Year

To be awarded to the male skier with the most impressive performance in any environment (backcountry, urban, park, etc.), and note that an athlete who excels in either one or all of these environments can be nominated. Since this is an athlete-based award, it is focused solely on the quality / level of skiing, as opposed to any filmmaking-related attributes.

Breakout Skier of the Year

To be awarded to an up-and-coming male or female skier with the most breakthrough performance in any environment (ie: backcountry, urban, park, etc.), and note that an athlete who excels in either one or all of these environments can be nominated. Since this is an athlete-based award, it is focused solely on the quality / level of skiing, as opposed to any filmmaking-related attributes.

Jury's Pick (Both Ski & Snowboard Films Are Eligible)

This is for the film that collectively captures both the ski and snowboard judging panels’ hearts and minds. It doesn't necessarily have to be the most well-made film, but something that is entertaining, enjoyable and proverbially spoke to the judges. In short, the jury’s favourite film.

Best Short Movie (Under 20 Minutes Long)

Judged on the overall quality of a film as a whole that has a running time of less than 20 minutes (not including credits): cinematography, editing, level of skiing, diversity of skiing (backcountry, urban, park, etc.), originality, storytelling (if applicable), and wow factor.

Best Backcountry Segment

Judged on the overall quality and amount of effort that was put into a single backcountry-focused segment: quality / level / effort of skiing and terrain, cinematography, editing, originality, storytelling (if applicable), and wow factor. Note that this is a hybrid award as opposed to being solely athlete or film-driven, and is therefore judged on the combination of both the athletic performance or performances that appear in the segment and its filmmaking attributes.

Best Urban Segment

Judged on the overall quality and amount of effort that was put into a single urban-focused segment: quality / level / effort of skiing and terrain, cinematography, editing, originality, storytelling (if applicable), and wow factor. Note that this is a hybrid award as opposed to being solely athlete or film-driven, and is therefore judged on the combination of both the athletic performance or performances that appear in the segment and its filmmaking attributes.

Best Storytelling

Judged on the overall quality of a film’s storyline / narrative: purpose, consistency, coherency, originality and emotional appeal.

Amateur Film of the Year

Judged on the overall quality of a film as a whole in the Amateur Category: cinematography, editing, level of skiing, diversity of skiing (backcountry, urban, park, etc.), originality, storytelling (if applicable), and wow factor.

Amateur Skier of the Year

To be awarded to either a male or female skier with the most impressive performance in any environment (ie: backcountry, urban, park, etc.) in a film in the Amateur Category, and note that an athlete who excels in either one or all of these environments can be nominated. Since this is an athlete-based award, it is focused solely on the quality / level of skiing, as opposed to any filmmaking-related attributes.
