In June of 2022, heavy rains and melting mountain snow pushed the Yellowstone River to its highest level in recorded history, nearly double its record of 30,000 CFS set in 1918. In dramatic footage seen around the world, houses 75 feet above the historical high water marks were ripped from their foundation and taken downstream, Yellowstone National Park was evacuated, and the reaction centered communities of Gardiner and Cooke City were effectively cut off from the rest of the state.
